  1. BlackBerry reveals when to expect BBM for Windows Phone Prior to that, BlackBerry had given no indication that it was even interested in launching software for Windows Phone, the rival platform that has pushed it into fourth place in the smartphone market. Indeed, as recently as January, the company reiterated that it had "no plans" for Microsoft's mobile OS. Now, though, those plans are very much in the works, but the exact release date remains ambiguous. The latest information, which comes via TechCrunch, was revealed by BlackBerry CEO John Chen in a company earnings call this week. Chen said that the app is targeted for "Fiscal Q2" - the second quarter in the company's fiscal year - indicating that it could arrive as early as May 2014, or as late as July. Chen also said that BBM will be pre-loaded onto Nokia X Android handsets and certain Lumia devices in selected markets, once BBM finally launches on Windows Phone. Source: TechCrunch via WMPowerUser
  2. Microsoft has removed six apps that were published earlier this week in the Windows Phone Store that were made to look like they were developed and published by Google. The apps, which included "Hangouts", "Google Maps", "Gmail" and more, also had prices of $1.99 each. The real versions are all free on iOS and Android devices. WinBeta first spotted the fake apps this week, which were all labeled as being published by "Google, Inc". So far, the only official Windows Phone app from Google is Search, which is shown in the store as coming from "Google Inc" (yes, there is no comma in the name). The Next Web contacted Microsoft on the matter and since then the apps were all removed. In a statement, Microsoft said, "We removed a series of apps for violating our policies concerning the use of misleading information. The apps attempted to misrepresent the identity of the publisher." However, there's been no comment from Microsoft on how the apps were approved for release in the Windows Phone Store in the first place. Microsoft has been criticized in the past for the low overall quality of apps in both Windows and Windows Phone Stores, and fake apps in the story have been a problem for a few years now. It would appear that Microsoft may need to spend some extra time evaluating which apps should be pushed in their app stores. Source: WinBeta and The Next Web | Image via The Next Web
  3. Microsoft has issued an update for Skype on Windows Phone bringing the app to version 2.16.0.266. Available in the Windows Phone Store, the new Skype version fixes bugs and introduces slight improvements in the sign up/sign in process for users. Now, first-time Skype users will have no choice but to register with the same Microsoft account that they’re currently using on their phone. Anther minor improvement is the introduction of the typing indicator icon whenever someone is writing you. Another less stalker-ish improvement is the option to mark new messages as read, so they don’t bug you. Naturally, there are also a couple of bugs squashed under the hood of the popular voice calling and messaging app, but Microsoft has just listed them as “general fixes”. 5. Gameloft has announced its plans to launch The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The successor to the game that got almost 1 million downloads in the Google Play Store is going to bring improved graphics and new storyline. The gamemaker says The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will stick to the plot of the movie as a result of the ongoing collaboration with Marvel Entertainment. Gameloft plans to launch the game in April for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. There’s no information regarding pricing yet. The original game costs $6.99 on iOS and Android (currently it’s on a discount, by the way), so we expect its successor to be similarly priced. Check out the announcement trailer below. Source
  6. Angry Birds Rio for Windows Phone 8 has received a new update, bumping its version number to 2.0. On top of that, the game is now free for all users to enjoy! "In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio de Janeiro, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel – two rare macaws and the stars of the hit motion picture, Rio. Angry Birds Rio pairs the physics-based gameplay of the original game with unique twists based on the film," the app description reads. Version 2.0 adds twenty new levels and six bonus levels set in a Brazilian port harbor. This is in addition to the vast amount of levels this game has to offer. The update has also refreshed the game with new graphics, just in time for the Rio 2 chapter. There is also a new underwater video, as well as Amazon river dolphins. Hit the download link below to snag the app. Enjoy! Download Link: Angry Birds RioSource
  7. Benchmarks are a big part of our reviews and Basemark X is one of the newer ones we’re using. The company behind it, Rightware, just announced that it has covered all three major smartphone OSes, which is a must-have for inter-platform comparisons. The latest version, Basemark X 1.1, is based on Unity 4.2, a popular game engine and IDE. This means the benchmark gives realistic estimates of performance for games that use the Unity engine and there are plenty of those on iOS and Android, even desktop games. You can check Unity 3D’s web site for a list of games that use the engine. Anyway, back to the benchmark. Rightware has a rich database called Power Board you can use to compare the performance of 1,500 smartphones and tablets. Basemark X 1.1 is available for free download on Android (from Play Store and Amazon App Store), iOS and Windows Phone. Source

    Angry Birds Epic released

The latest installment in the popular Angry Birds franchise has just been released for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone devices: Angry Birds Epic. But if you think this is your typical Angry Birds game, then think again. Epic is actually a tun-based RPG, yes, you read that correctly. The plot delves into the longtime feud between the birds and the pigs, which all began when, you guessed it, the filthy swine burgled eggs from their avian rivals. A band of birds flock together on a journey to get their eggs back and make the pigs pay for their misdeeds. Like pretty much any RPG out there, each bird in the party comes with their own strengths and weaknesses. Some birds do better against certain enemies, and vice versa. You’ll be able to upgrade your heroes abilities and armor as the game progresses. The animation style has certainly received an upgrade from the previous games, and looks like it could be an interesting departure from the rest of the series. Here is a Trailer, Enjoy You can get in on the action by heading over to the Apple App Store, Windows Phone Store, or Google Play Store and downloading the free app. Do expect in-app purchases in the game, so think twice before you hand your phone or tablet over to a click-happy child. 9. Windows Phone may be improving as a platform, however, its biggest flaw is its lack of apps. Microsoft has steadily been rectifying this, especially on the social network front. It looks like Pinterest is the latest social medium to give Windows Phone some love, as they have released a beta application for Microsoft’s platform. You can do pretty much anything on the beta app you would on the Pinterest site, and that’s mainly because the beta application is hardly a standalone application at all. As it stands, Pinterest for Windows Phone is currently a glorified shortcut to the mobile version of the site, with a few Windows Phone native features tacked on. As a result, don’t expect the integration with Windows Phone to be as good as on iOS or Android. Since it’s a beta build, Pinterest is going to rely significantly on feedback from its Windows Phone user base. Are you a Windows Phone lover, you can try the Pinterest BETA app from the Windows Phone marketplace. Download Link Pinterest BETA Source
  10. Microsoft has created a new "How To" site that teaches you how to use your phone like an expert. Included on the site is a number of videos that reveal how to personalize your phone, how to use Cortana, how to play music and games, how to use the camera, and more. This is a timely move by Microsoft, since the software giant has just started rolling out the Lumia Blue update for Lumia phones. This includes Windows Phone 8.1, and thus, there might be some questions about new features such as Cortana. The virtual personal assistant is available in the U.S. for Windows Phone 8.1 users, and will soon be released world-wide. If you're new to the platform, or want to learn some of the things that you didn't know that your phone could do, check out the homepage. Easy to understand videos show you precisely how to get certain features to run on your Windows Phone handset. Homepage Source
  11. BlackBerry has released their BBM application for the Windows Phone platform. The app is beta for now, so you will need an invite to be able to use the app on your Windows Phone device. The app will be open for everyone but until then, this is only for those with an invite for the private beta. Download Link BBM for Windows beta Source
  12. The New York Attorney General has signed agreements with Google and Microsoft to add "kill switches" to Android and Windows Phone devices. It comes as part of the "Secure our Smartphones" initiative, where the report stresses the importance of kill switch safeguards for mobile phone platforms in order to keep user data safe. With these "kill switches", you'll be able to render your phone useless, remotely, in the event of its theft. The kill switch issue has been one that's been hotly discussed. For example, in California, the kill switch idea was immediately rejected, but then the state recently approved it this May. This bill states that whenever a new phone is purchased in the state of California, it must be loaded with the kill switch software. Apple already has a kill switch feature loaded on its iPhones, and the New York City Attorney General cited that there was a 19% decrease in iPhone thefts ever since the feature was implemented; whereas Samsung phones that still didn't carry the feature experienced a 40% increase in robberies. Now it's unclear as to when the kill switches will be added to the Android and Windows Phone platforms, but when they are, every one of Google and Microsoft's phones will have a kill switch. Source
  13. HTC has sent out press invites for an event scheduled for August 19th in New York City. There's no word about the announcements the company plans to make, but there's a lot of speculation going around. A plethora of rumors has popped up in the past few weeks, hinting at HTC working on a new Google Nexus tablet codenamed Volantis. It's been a while since the Taiwanese OEM collaborated with Google on a Nexus device, but leaks from several often-correct publications suggest we might see a tablet in a the coming weeks. Second in the rumor mill is a new Windows Phone 8.1 device. Last we heard, the Taiwanese OEM was rumored to launch a Windows Phone device which will make use of the Duo Cameras and BoomSound speakers, and will resemble to the HTC One handset. HTC is one of the hardware partners for Microsoft, but it's been almost two years since we saw a WP handset. Source
  14. Microsoft’s unofficial mascot, Clippy, has become somewhat of an Internet legend. The paperclip who was part of a previous version of Office was sacked many years ago, but the personality lives on in various Easter eggs in Microsoft products. The latest iteration where Clippy appears is in Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual assistant for Windows Phone 8.1. And if after seeing Clippy in Windows Phone 8.1 you wondered what other personas Cortana may undertake during her routine activities, wonder no more, as one individual by the name of Leon, has done the hard work, for us. In a post over on his site, LeonZandman.com, he describes how he was able to dig up all of the personas that Clippy can take on and it’s a post worth reading if you'd like to know the back story. As you can see from some of the gifs included in this post, there are quite a few personas available for Cortana but we can’t confirm yet if she can actively use these images. Right now, these files were all found within Windows Phone 8.1 and Cortana has access to them but they may not be currently in use. But, know that they are out there and we suspect, over time, these gifs will make their way into Cortana if they are not already in use. It could be possible to trigger these personas now with the correct phrases as with Clippy, you have to ask it a very specific question to enact the Clippy Easter egg and these other personas may require similar questions too; there are more personas at the source link below too. 15. It's been a while since Microsoft released the Windows Phone 8.1 Developers Preview for users. You can download it even if you're not a developer, but it seems people are having troubles when they try to update to Windows Phone 8.1. The update downloads on the devices, but when the user tries to install it, it ends up with the error 80188309. Most of the users are using the Huawei Ascend W1, but the error has popped up on other models as well. A moderator on the Microsoft support site has responded to the issue, and said an update would be sent to the devices to fix the issue. Microsoft has collected details about the devices, and model numbers of users who are experiencing difficulties, but didn't mention an exact time frame when users can expect the update. A moderator on the support forums said he will provide more details on Thursday, April 24th. "A little clarification on the update notification. The notification has stopped for all devices that have not yet taken the first update, however those that have taken the first update and are waiting for the second update to the current 8.1 build will continue to occur. At this point, I would recommend ignoring the update notification and wait for further updates from us," Eli A, a Microsoft site moderator says. He further states, "The update itself is not going to be available today, or likely early next week. We will continue to work on getting you this update but it will not be as fast as you would like. I know a lot of you would like a better timeline on when it will be available, and at this time I cannot commit to a date. I will however, commit to updating you next Thursday April 24th, 2014 with any additional news. If I have any news or details before then, I will of course update you at that time." It's good to see the Redmond giant working on the issue, to make sure its users are happy. If any one of you faced the same problem, let us know in the comments below. We'll also update you as soon as more information comes up regarding this issue. Source
  16. Apple's iOS platform is still ranked number two mobile operating system worldwide, while Android is still number one with few chances to lose the crown as the OS with the largest market share. However, it appears that Microsoft's Windows Phone gained a lot of traction due to Nokia's push in various markets, mostly European and Asian. It's no secret that Windows Phone recently switched placed with BlackBerry and has become the number three operating system in the United States, but Microsoft's platform is still far behind Apple's iOS which is ranked number two in this market. With only 4.8% market share in the United States, Windows Phone does not seem to have any chance against iOS, which is accounted fro 40.8% of the smartphones market according to Fortumo's latest survey published by Pocketgamer. Still, that doesn't seem that Windows Phone can't sell better in other markets. In fact, Fortumo's survey confirmed that as of December 2013 there are 24 countries where Windows Phone is outselling Apple's iOS. In order to have a bigger picture on the OS market share, there's a very interesting infographic published by Fortumo, which mentions that Windows Phone only outperformed iOS in 7 countries in march 2013. There's a huge jump in less than a year and we can safely assume that at the moment the number of countries where Windows Phone is outselling iOS has increased. We can confirm that in Romania, which hasn't been included in the survey, Windows Phone outperformed Windows Phone this year. The reason Windows Phone is now outselling iOS in many countries is the fact that smartphones are much cheaper than Apple's and customers have more devices to choose from. Among the 24 countries included in this research we noticed India, Mexico, Finland, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Italy and many more. Another reason for which Windows Phone seems to be the preferred operating system for many customers in these markets is carrier billing. Given the fact that many customers do not have access to a credit card, they prefer to purchase a smartphone that offers them the possibility to pay apps via carrier billing. Windows Phone does offer carrier billing in many of these countries where the platform's market share is rising, but this features is not supported by iOS and goes against Apple's App Store guidelines. 18. There’s good news and bad news for executives in Redmond today — Windows Phone’s market share has edged above BlackBerry’s, but the overall size of Microsoft’s slice of the pie hasn’t budged. According to the latest data from ComScore, Windows Phone now accounts for 3.2 percent of handsets in the United States, with BlackBerry lagging behind on 3.1 percent. Dig deeper into the figures and the news isn’t so encouraging for Microsoft. That 3.2 percent market share is the same as it was last October, so Windows Phone hasn’t made any inroads into the iOS/Android stranglehold. BlackBerry’s share fell from 3.6 percent, and it looks like it’s the iPhone that has taken up the slack. Android remains the most widely used mobile operating system in the U.S., seen on 51.7 percent of handsets (down 0.5 percent since October). iOS comes in second with 41.6 percent (a rise of 1 percent over the last three months). The market continues to expand, so Microsoft did sell more handsets during the previous quarter, but it will be disappointed not to have made more of an impact in terms of overall share. Elsewhere in the ComScore figures, Facebook was the app with the widest reach, appearing on 77.6 percent of mobile phones running iOS or Android. Google Play was second (52.4 percent) and YouTube came in third (49.7 percent).Google and Facebook also dominated the list of sites accessed via mobile browsers. For BlackBerry, the dark times continue — earlier in the week CEO John Chen gave the company a 50/50 chance of surviving, saying that he plans to have the firm profitable again by March 2016. Microsoft, meanwhile, will be pinning its hopes on the 2014 range of Nokia Lumia handsets, including the recently leaked Lumia 630. Source
  19. Microsoft is currently running two promotions that might be of interest to people looking to get a new device and get rid of an old one. The first one is a trade-in deal that can net you up to $250 worth of store credit if you trade in an old smartphone or a tablet. There are serious restrictions though – first of, the deal is for US Microsoft stores (including Puerto Rico) and Canada. Second, it must be a working device, with no cracks on the screen, no water damage and you must even provide the original charger and other accessories. The device must also not be password protected (to prevent trading in stolen or found devices). The exact amount you get will be determined by a Microsoft Store employee. The deal is valid until 2nd March 2014. Another deal (this one US-only) is a Nokia Lumia 520 or 521 with a 12-month subscription to Xbox Music for $99 total. The Xbox Music Subscription alone costs $99 usually, while the Lumia 520/521 is $60-$70 in the Microsoft Store. Both deals have a limit of one per customer and cannot be combined with other deals, i.e. you can't pawn your old phone and grab a Lumia 520/521 with the money. Source
  20. An upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 device has been leaked via famous Twitter-based leaker @evleaks, showing off what appears to be the first new WP device from Samsung in over a year. Evleaks has reported on their twitter account that a Samsung handset, codenamed “Huron” with the model number SM-W750V, will be headed to Verizon. The SM-W750V Huron, which looks eerily like a Samsung Galaxy S, will be based on Windows Phone 8.1, and apparently run on Verizon in the US. Besides the impressively thin bezels, the Huron is rumored to feature a fullHD display and a 13MP shooter. The SM-W750V codename has also shown up on the site of the famous GFXBench benchmarking tool, which lists the screen resolution at 720 x 1280. This last bit is claimed by several sources as being incorrect, as GFXBench will sometimes display inaccurate display resolution. Also revealed by GFXBench is the presence of a quad-core CPU and Adreno 305 graphics. No word on pricing and availability of the Huron just yet. Source
  21. No, Windows Phone won’t be catching up to Android in terms of market share anytime soon. However, there is one key area where Windows Phone may at last surpass Android: It might soon generate more revenue for Microsoft than Android does. Beyond Devices takes a look at some of the latest numbers for Windows Phone revenues in Microsoft’s latest earnings report and finds that revenue generated from Windows Phone licensing has narrowed the gap with licensing revenue collected from Android handset manufacturers. In all, 42% of licensing revenues came from Windows Phone vendors on the quarter while 58% came from Android vendors, Beyond Devices estimates. If Windows Phone keeps showing impressive sales growth over the next few quarters then it could soon generate more revenue for Microsoft than Android does within the next year. “Given the overall growth rate of Windows Phone relative to Android, and the higher fee per device for Windows Phone licensing, it’s likely that the percentage of revenue from Windows Phone licensing will continue to grow over time, such that it may well account for the majority of revenue in the overall ‘Windows Phone’ bucket sometime in late 2014 or early 2015,” writes Beyond Devices. “I’d estimate that it will be another billion-dollar business for Microsoft within the first couple of quarters of 2014.” A graph showing estimates of Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Android revenue shares follows below. Source
  22. Finally, Windows Phone has started getting the traction it truly deserves. Micromax, the leading smartphone manufacturer from India, is reportedly working on making Windows Phone powered smartphones and will be shelling them out soon. Micromax rules over 25% of the mobile market share in India, and the company also announced its LapTab, a dual boot tablet that runs both Windows 8.1 and Android Jelly Bean, at CES 2014 a few weeks ago. Micromax isn't the only company in the nation which is working on a Windows Phone, though. Last year, ZTE announced that it will be making its return to the Windows Phone ecosystem. Also, last year, Xolo (Lava), another leading manufacturer, stated that it was working on Windows Phone, although we haven't heard from them since. With giants like Sony wanting to make a comeback, and small players like these stepping up to adapt to this ecosystem, Windows Phone looks ahead to a bright future. Meanwhile, Micromax has been on a roll lately, first by getting appreciated by Android's head, SundarPichai, for its incredibly cheap and durable Android phones and then hiring the Hollywood actor, Hugh Jackman, as its brand ambassador. 23. Google’s Android operating system managed to grab exactly 81.0 percent smartphone share in the third quarter of 2013. Rounding out the top four smartphone operating systems were iOS at 12.9 percent, Windows Phone at 3.6 percent, and BlackBerry at 1.7 percent. The latest quarterly figures come from IDC, which summarized its findings in the following chart: IDC estimates total Android smartphone shipments worldwide reached 211.6 million units, letting Google’s mobile operating system power four out every five of the 261.1 million smartphones that shipped last quarter. The figure allowed Android to push past the 80 percent market share mark for the first time. IDC noted that while Android moved forward as a whole, the vast majority of its vendors still struggle to find meaningful market share. Samsung accounted for 39.9 percent of all Android shipments for the quarter, while the rest of the vendors either saw single-digit market share or even less than 1 percent (as was the case for the majority). Apple’s iOS saw its market share decline during the past quarter, despite reaching a new high for third quarter volumes. IDC naturally blamed the fact the world was waiting for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, which will likely drive record volumes, market share, and year-over-year growth in the last quarter of the year. Windows Phone posted the largest year-over-year growth worldwide of any of the leading operating systems (up 156.0 percent), once again largely thanks to Nokia, which accounted for 93.2 percent of all the Windows Phone-powered smartphones shipped during the quarter. On the other hand, BlackBerry recorded the largest year-over-year decline among the leading operating systems during the quarter, due to softer demand for its new BB10 operating system and despite demand for its older BB7 devices within emerging markets. It’s worth noting that IDC’s estimates are quite close to those of Strategy Analytics’ figures for the quarter. The latter had slightly higher percentages for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, but showed the same overall trend: Android up, iOS down, Windows Phone up, and BlackBerry down. Original Article
  24. Nokia’s Lumia 520 has been pushing Windows Phone’s marketshare along thanks to its low cost, and it appears its replacement, the Lumia 525, will arrive shortly. Photos of the Lumia 525 have leaked today thanks to Chinese certification agency TENAA. It looks to be almost identical to the existing Lumia 520 on the outside, with a rear camera and similar styling. Rumors suggest it will ship with a dual-core Qualcomm processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera, and with a focus on music. It could be one of the most important Lumias yet. Nokia recently hit a record of 8.8 million Lumia sales and the company admitted it was largely due to the Lumia 520. Adduplex, a firm that measures the usage statistics of Windows Phones, claims Nokia's Lumia 520 is the most popular Windows Phone worldwide with a 23 percent market share. If Nokia’s upcoming Lumia 525 is priced similarly then it will likely help Microsoft push its Windows Phone marketshare even further. It’s not clear exactly when Nokia plans to announce the Lumia 525, but with the device passing through certification it appears to be close to launching, perhaps before the end of the year. source: theverge
