  1. A message on the Windows Health Dashboard website has confirmed that Microsoft is now beginning to roll out Windows 11 version 23H2 to devices with 21H2 and 22H2. Microsoft says it will automatically update such PCs gradually as they have reached the end of servicing - in the case of Windows 11 21H2 - or are soon going to reach the end of servicing, like in the case of Windows 11 22H2, that reaches the end of servicing in October later this year. The company has also added that the process is based on its machine learning (ML) training that will assist in the "safe" phased rollout of version 23H2 (2023 update). Microsoft writes: This news comes a week after the company reminded users about the impending end of optional preview updates on Windows 11 22H2. If you are wondering whether your PC is supported by Windows 11 23H2, you shouldn't worry since Microsoft has not updated the system requirements since the previous Windows 11 versions. Source
  2. Windows 11 version 21H2 is the original release of Windows 11 that began rolling out globally on October 4, 2021. Although this version of the OS still has about nine months of support left, Microsoft has announced today that it has begun the process to update devices running this version to the latest feature update automatically. In an update on its webpage displaying the status of known issues in Windows 11 version 21H2, Microsoft has stated that it has kicked off the process to automatically update consumer and non-managed business devices running Windows 11 version 21H2 to version 22H2 - which became available in September 2022 with the name "Windows 11 2022 Update". The rationale behind this automatic update is that Microsoft believes that consumers will be most secure using a more recent version of Windows. This is interesting because version 21H2 of the OS is still supported until October 10, 2023, which is about nine months away. It seems like Microsoft is being proactive rather than waiting for the end of servicing date. The way automatic updates work is that feature updates are automatically downloaded and installed on your device. However, you are given some amount of freedom over when you want to restart your device to complete the update. If Microsoft detects an issue such as incompatibility with your device during this process, it will put a safeguard hold until the problem is resolved. This process isn't exclusive to Windows 11, Microsoft has been doing it since Windows 10. Of course, if you'd rather install the update now instead of waiting for Microsoft to force it upon you at an inconvenient time, you can head over to Windows Update in the Settings app and check for updates. Microsoft has boasted that its analysis and customer feedback for Windows 11 version 22H2 that customers are happier with it, but you can be the judge of that too. Your Windows 11 version 21H2 device will soon be updated to 22H2 automatically
  3. Users of the Thunderbird email client who still use Thunderbird 115.x will be upgraded to the new version automatically starting today. The team released the new major version of the Thunderbird email client earlier this month. Thunderbird 128 is a major release that does not really look that different from the previous version. Highlights of the new version are improved theme and customization options, use of the Windows notification system on Windows devices, or improvements to the OpenPGP implementation. The team is still working on core functionality, including Exchange support and native synchronization of data, among other things. The current release version is Thunderbird 128.0.1 ESR, which fixed just a few minor issues. Tip: if you run add-ons, you may want to make sure that they are compatible with the new version. If not, they get disabled automatically after the upgrade. Thunderbird 115 to 128 upgrades The upgrade to Thunderbird 128 is now available. Previously, users had to download the installer from the Thunderbird website to upgrade manually. This is no longer necessary, as Thunderbird will inform users about the new version. The new Thunderbird 128 will also be offered when you click on Help > About Thunderbird. Thunderbird users who do not want the update at this time have two main options: Disable the automatic check for updates on startup under Settings > General. Configure a policy to disable updates. The policy requires a bit of work. You need to create a policies.json file and place it in the Distribution folder of the Thunderbird installation. You can download a very simple policies file with a click on the following link: policies Download and extract the file. All that is left then is to place it into the Distribution folder of the Thunderbird installation. You should now see "Updates disabled by your system administrator" when you open Help > About Thunderbird. If you want to upgrade, you need to disable the policy in the polices file first, e.g., by moving the entire policies.json file out of the distribution folder. Pro Tip: You can use winget to upgrade Thunderbird, even if updates are disabled. Just run winget upgrade mozilla.thunderbird from the command line to do so. Do you use Thunderbird as your main client for emails? Have you upgraded already? If yes, how do you like the new version? If no, what is keeping you? Feel free to leave a comment down below. 4. Earlier this week, Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates for June 2024. We have covered them in their dedicated articles here: Windows 11 (KB5039212 / KB5039213) and Windows 10 (KB5039211 / KB5039217 / KB5039214 / KB5039225). In the meantime, the company also published a Defender update for Windows 10, 11, and Server images. Microsoft has also announced that Windows 10 version 21H2 has reached the end of servicing status. The company had published a reminder for the same 30 days ago. In its announcement, the company says that Windows will initiate an automatic update to version 22H2 and as always, it has also reiterated about updating to Windows 11 on eligible PCs. Microsoft writes: In addition to these, Microsoft has also reminded us about the differences between LTSC and non-LTSC as it has clarified that Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IOT Enterprise LTSC 2021 will continue to have mainstream support till January of 2027 with the latter having an extended end of support scheduled for 2032. 5. Microsoft has issued a new 30-day reminder about the upcoming end of servicing (EoS) of Windows 11 versions 21H2 (Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise) and 22H2 (Home and Pro). The company has stated that an automatic forced update to version 23H2 will be initiated after the next Patch Tuesday (October 8, 2024) and is meant to keep such devices updated with the latest security updates and alike. On its Windows health dashboard website, Microsoft writes: While it has been nearly a year since Windows 11 23H2 became available, the OS is still far from flawless, it seems, at least on some system configurations. Recent performance testing has shown that even a seemingly good Windows 11 installation can lead to a lot of performance loss, even though nothing appears to be the issue. Microsoft also initiated a wider rollout of version 23H2 in July. Soon, the company is also expected to make version 24H2 generally available for everyone. Despite some longstanding problems, the new feature update is expected to bring several improvements, such as fewer graphics driver crashes, hardware AV1 encoding, and more.
