  1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is turning 10 years old, and CD Projekt RED's fantasy RPG has stood the test of time. Exactly 10 years ago on May 19, 2025, developer CD Projekt RED took a huge leap, launching The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt after years of work. File this under "water gets things wet," but it turned out to be a popular game, receiving critical praise and commercial success — so much so that as of 2023, it's sold over 50 million copies. As The Witcher 3 celebrates its 10th anniversary, I'm indulging in a trip down memory lane. Over a decade ago, I was in a pretty rough headspace and I was having a hard time finding my place in everything. Still, I loved the Witcher series, enjoying the books and the second game, and I was scarfing down every last bit of information I could find on the then-upcoming third entry in Geralt's journey. While it was CD Projekt RED's third mainline game, it was a gargantuan leap from what had been accomplished in 2011's more modestly-scoped The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The Witcher 3 promised a huge open world, more involved monster contracts, as well as the debut of major characters from the books like Ciri and Yennefer. When I eventually got my hands on the full thing, I fell in love. It was everything I wanted it to be, with a world filled with secrets and mystery, an open breeze at the player's back. It was a game that delivered tough choices, with side quests and monster hunts that often felt just as involved and complex as the main story. I was enraptured with the narrative of the Bloody Baron and his shame, chasing after the titular Wild Hunt, and of course, Ciri reuniting with Geralt after so many years. That continued in the Hearts of Stone expansion, which tells a dark, Brothers Grimm-esque tale, a solemn warning that sometimes you'll get what you asked for. Finally, the developers brought it in for a landing with 2016's Blood and Wine expansion, a 30+ hour story of vampires and fables that could've been a standalone game by itself. Games seeking to induce raw emotions can often be hit or miss, but there's more than a few moments in The Witcher 3 that can still kick off the waterworks. It's inextricably tied to one of the hardest parts of my life, and in being so, it has more than stood the test of time. If you haven't played it yet, this is the perfect time to correct that mistake. Yennefer, Geralt's tempestous long-time lover. (Image credit: CD Projekt RED) Of course, The Witcher 3 isn't the only big game that CD Projekt RED is well-known for. Constant support means that Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way since its rough 2020 launch, and I thoroughly enjoyed 2023's Phantom Liberty expansion, which introduced spy thriller elements and a tense mystery. Even so, this game is still CD Projekt RED's undisputed crown jewel, a triumph of storytelling and game design. Updates have made it shine even more on modern hardware, adding ray tracing support on the latest consoles and PC, but it's always been the same special game. More personally, The Witcher 3 is still one of my favorite games of all time. Two Witchers taking a moment to rest. (Image credit: CD Projekt RED) It's that beautiful foundation that I hope CD Projekt RED keeps in mind in developing The Witcher 4. Ciri is taking the lead, and I'm happy to see her as the protagonist. There's so much potential in seeing things through her eyes, pulling from what worked extremely well in The Witcher 3 while introducing new mysteries and horrors hidden through the world. I'm sure this next adventure is still a ways off (2027 seems possible, at least), but if it can reach the same heights as The Witcher 3, then I'll be ecstatic. Until then, I'll see everyone on the Path. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC (via GOG, the Epic Games Store, and Steam), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. 2. It was late last year when CD Projekt RED announced it would be bringing official modding tools to its hugely popular RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Arriving almost 10 years after the game's original release, the tools will let players on PC add new or edit existing content with "nearly limitless freedom." Today, the studio announced a playtest for the upcoming editor, letting interested modders try out an early version of what's incoming to gather valuable feedback. The editor is described as powerful because it's based on the same toolset CD Projekt RED had used when developing the game. Anyone interested in participating and who already owns a copy of The Witcher 3 can head over to the newly set up Steam store page for The Witcher 3 REDkit and click the Request Access button. "Playtest access will be distributed in batches," explains the studio in today's announcement. "After receiving access 'The Witcher 3 REDkit Playtest' will appear in your Steam Library. Remember that the editor will require The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt game files in order to work properly, so make sure you have it installed too." Feedback on this early version of the editor can be given straight from the REDkit toolset and via the Steam forums, the MODS section of CD Projekt RED's own forums, and the studio's official Discord server. Adding to that, the studio had a surprise announcement today. Steam Workshop support is finally coming to The Witcher 3 soon, letting PC players easily get mods and install/remove them without requiring separate mod managers or digging through game files. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt players can access the Workshop Beta by joining the Steam group available here. Keep in mind that this is a separate test from the REDkit playtest. Following that, a beta option will show up for the game in its Steam properties titled "workshop_test." Selecting that will download the required changes to access the beta. The studio has not yet given official release dates for the REDkit editor nor the Workshop support. Source
  3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was first released in 2015 by developer and publisher CD Projekt RED. The open-world fantasy RPG has sold a total of 50 million copies as of March 2023, according to the last financial numbers from the company. However, many PC owners of the game have been waiting for CD Projekt RED to release official mod tools for the game for a long time. In November 2023, the company revealed it planned to release its mod tools sometime in 2024. In mid-April, it launched a playtest of the tools for select PC Steam owners. Today, CD Projekt RED announced on its Steam page that the REDkit mod editor for The Witcher 3 will officially launch for all PC owners of the game on May 21. The game's official forums talk about the features of the REDkit mod editor, which is described as a "refurbished" version of the same tools that the CD Projekt RED development team used to make the original game: Mod makers can also package their creations with these tools and release them as standard mod packages, or as DLC packs for the game. The Steam version of the game will also have support for Steam Workshop features that should allow mod creators to quickly share their creations with other Steam PC players. PC players outside of Steam like GOG.com and the Epic Games Store can also download mods via the NexusMods site. Source
  4. Almost 10 years after its launch, CD Projekt RED's grand RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is slated to receive official modding tools. This would allow the community to add new or edit existing content much easier than what modders have been doing so far. Announced today by the developer, the tools will utilize the same REDengine 3 editor that was used to build The Witcher 3, letting players customize their experience to their liking and share creations with others. "We're thrilled to announce that we're working on a mod editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, said CD Projekt RED today in a forum post. "It will allow you to create your own experiences in the game by making something completely new or editing existing quests and content." "The editor will be available for free for all owners of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC," the studio added. As for when can fans expect to gain access to these reworked dev tools, CD Projekt RED says it is "planning to make it happen in 2024." While the RPG has had a small but dedicated modding scene, this has been accomplished using a variety of unofficial tools made by the community. This has also mostly been limited to changes like texture replacements, tweaking in-game settings (like removing inventory limits), and new shaders. With the upcoming official tools though, we could see completely new questlines, enemies, and perhaps even new regions for Geralt — or someone else entirely — to explore. The news drops at an interesting time. CD Projekt RED has already announced it is leaving behind REDengine completely for its future projects. This includes a new trilogy set in The Witcher universe, a remake of the first game in the fantasy series, as well as a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, with all of them using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5. 5. The enhanced edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has seen quite a turbulent development. Originally announced in 2020, the "next-gen" release has seen two major delays so far, and the latest one even saw developer Saber Interactive being pulled out of the project, losing its Q2 2022 launch window in the process. Now, right as the game's seventh anniversary passes by, there is a new launch plan. CD Projekt RED has announced via Twitter that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next-Gen version will be hitting stores in the fourth quarter of 2022. But once again, there isn't a firm date attached to the project, opening the door for more slippage. The original developer behind the hugely popular RPG, CD Projekt RED, is back on the driving seat of this enhanced edition now, as it also works on future Cyberpunk 2077 content. Only the original announcement details regarding the enhanced edition are still available, with CD Projekt saying in 2020 "a range of visual and technical improvements" as well as ray tracing and faster loading times will be present. In addition to the base game and all expansions and DLC, the package will also ship with new content inspired by the popular Netflix series. In the latest numbers shared by CD Projekt, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 40 million copies since its launch seven years ago. That count should get bumped up by a good margin once the next-gen edition hits PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It will arrive as a free upgrade to those who have already purchased the previous generation version. The Witcher 3 next-gen edition now aiming for a late 2022 launch
  6. The Witcher 3 next-gen edition will include free DLC inspired by Netflix series Last year, CD Projekt RED revealed it was working on a next-generation version of its hit RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, though a release window was absent. Today during the first-ever WitcherCon event, the studio revealed that the upgrade will land later this year, and it will include some bonuses inspired by The Witcher Netflix series. The studio also showed off the updated cover art, seen above. The DLC seems to be additional items that are being brought over from the show and not expansion-sized features. They may be similar to some of the free DLC the RPG received in the months after its launch back in 2015 such as alternate looks for side characters and new Gwent cards, as well as hairstyles and armor sets for Geralt. More information regarding these mysterious new items, and hopefully about the upgrade itself, will be coming soon according to the studio. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt next-gen version is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 sometime later this year containing the base game, the Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone expansions, and DLCs, plus a range of visual improvements that include ray tracing support. Owners of the game's previous-generation version will receive the new edition for free. Meanwhile, for those who are looking forward to the TV series' return, Netflix announced today at WitcherCon that The Witcher second season will begin airing on December 17. 7. The game was delayed this week CD Projekt Red (CDPR) announced on Wednesday that the next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would be delayed, but the company insists it’s not in “some sort of development hell” (via Polygon). As part of the delay announcement, CDPR said that the update would miss its planned Q2 release and that the studio would move development of the update in-house. CDPR did not announce a new release date or even an expected timeline, which led some publications — including The Verge — to write that the game has been delayed indefinitely. CDPR’s SVP of business development, Michał Nowakowski, took issue with that characterization in an investor call this week. “When it comes to [the] next-gen launch of The Witcher 3, I think there one comment I actually wanted to make,” he said. (Scrub to 30:34 if you’d like to hear for yourself.) “I’ve been looking at headlines that popped up here and there over the internet, and I’ve seen one that really drew my attention, which is, ‘Witcher 3 next-gen delayed indefinitely.’ Which sounds like the game is in some sort of development hell. I want to state that this is not the fact. There’s been a lot of insinuations that we’re going to launch [in] June [of] next year or something like that. That’s completely not the case.” While he stopped short of giving details on when we might be able to play the update, the next comments from Nowakowski suggest that it may not be too far off. “Everything we’re saying is: we have taken development of the game in-house. The game is going to be finished in-house. We’re evaluating our time. That requires a bit of investigation. That’s all we’re saying. Nobody is saying the game is delayed in some monumental time gap ahead of us.” CD Projekt Red’s Karolina Gnaś confirmed to The Verge that the update was originally being developed by Saber Interactive, which handled the impressive Switch port for The Witcher 3. However, Saber Interactive has an office in Russia, and as Kotaku noted, a Russian gaming outlet reported in March that CDPR cut ties with that office, which was reportedly handling the next-gen update. Gnaś did not reply to a question asking if the Russian office was the one working on the update. The Witcher 3’s next-gen update isn’t in ‘development hell,’ according to CD Projekt Red
  8. CD Projekt RED announced an upgraded and enhanced version of its hugely popular fantasy RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt all the way back in 2020, promising major graphics upgrades and other improvements for the new consoles and PC. The upgrade's launch plans would later be pushed to 2022. Now it seems another major delay has hit the project, and this time there isn't even a new release window. "We have decided to have our in-house development team conduct the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," CD Projekt RED today announced suddenly via its official The Witcher Twitter profile. Saber Interactive — the studio known for its support work with major studios of Xbox, Rockstar, and others, and even ported The Witcher 3 to the Nintendo Switch — was behind the next-gen project, at least until recently it seems. It's unclear why CD Projekt RED decided to take over the development. "We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be done and thus have to postpone Q2 release until further notice," continued CD Projekt RED on Twitter. "We'll update you as soon as we can. Thank you for your understanding." With a Q2 2022 launch now out of the question, fans may be waiting quite a bit longer to get their upgraded Geralt action, depending on how the original studio evaluates the work required. This long-awaited version of The Witcher 3 is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It is said to include visual upgrades like ray tracing as well as technical improvements. Elements from the franchise's popular Netflix series are also being added to this release. CD Projekt RED is also working bringing back The Witcher franchise for a brand-new gaming saga, this time powered by Unreal Engine 5. The Witcher 3 next-gen launch slips again, CDPR is taking over development duties
  9. Two years after the original announcement and multiple delays, the next-gen enhanced version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is almost here. Today, CD Projekt RED has shared details on the project's features as well as gameplay footage for the first time. Watch the free update's trailer above, which shows off recorded footage from a high-end PC. The studio is touting ray-traced global illumination support across all current-gen platforms with this update. Other graphical additions include screen space reflections, dynamic resolution scaling, as well as texture and foliage upgrades. Specifically on the consoles side, quality and performance modes (60 FPS) are being introduced, while PlayStation 5 players will be happy to know that haptic feedback and adaptive triggers support is incoming. Other additions include Netflix show-inspired content that include a new mission and its recognizable Nilfgaardian armor, pause during cutscenes, HUD customization, a photo mode, a new camera, and even features from popular mods on PC. Cloud-based cross-save support across all platforms are here too, letting players pick up the adventure where they left off from PC, Xbox Series X|S, or PlayStation 5. While anyone who already owns the current versions of the game is getting the upgrade content for free, CD Projekt will be releasing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition as well. It will contain the base experience plus all post-launch content, from the free DLC to the story expansions - Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Only a digital release will be available at first, with a physical edition coming at a later date. Lastly, the last-generation version still available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch aren't being completely left behind either. The studio plans to bring gameplay improvements and the Netflix show-themed add-ons to these platforms later. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's next-gen update and the Complete Edition version will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on December 14, 2022. A remake of the original The Witcher as well as a new trilogy set in the same universe are currently in development. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's next-gen update gets its first gameplay trailer
  10. It has now been two years since CD Projekt RED announced that an updated version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is in development, one aimed at the latest generation consoles. With multiple delays out of the way, the version now finally has a firm launch date attached to it: December 14, 2022. The project is coming as a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the hit fantasy RPG, which amounts to over 40 million players now. While no further details of the improvements have been revealed yet, the studio has said previously that visual and technical upgrades, as well as ray tracing additions, and lowered loading times will be present in this version. The next-gen edition was on track to release in the latter half of 2021 with fresh DLC inspired by the Netflix adaptation. However, a delay pushed the update to 2022, followed by yet another slip earlier this year that had the studio even remove any mention of a launch window. The latter delay was also when CD Projekt RED took over the project's development over from Saber Interactive. The studio will be hosting a gameplay and feature reveal livestream next week on its Twitch channel. The exact timing of the showcase hasn't been revealed yet. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's next-gen update is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 platforms, with last-generation console edition owners getting a free upgrade. CD Projekt is also working on a remake of the original The Witcher, as well as a brand-new trilogy set in the same universe. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's next-gen update finally gets a release date
  11. What you need to know CD Projekt RED shared its financial results for Q1 2023, revealing that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has crossed 50 million copies sold. The Witcher franchise as a whole is over 75 million copies sold. CD Projekt RED currently has multiple Witcher games in development, both internally and with partnerships at external teams. The seemingly final tale of the White Wolf isn't slowing down in sales. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is over 50 million copies sold, per the Q1 2023 earnings report from CD Projekt. That's up 10 million copies from April 2022, where it was reported the game had crossed 40 million copies sold. Meanwhile, The Witcher franchise of games is over 75 million, meaning that The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings have put up a combined 25 million copies sold. Looking ahead, CD Projekt RED is developing a number of new games in The Witcher universe, including one codenamed "Project Polaris" that is meant to kickstart a new trilogy. CD Projet RED is overseeing an external team, Fool's Theory, which is early in development working on a remake of the first Witcher game. There's also a more stylized project in development at The Molasses Flood, which was recently reshuffled as the team suffered layoffs. In addition to the world of The Witcher, CD Projekt RED is working on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the first and only expansion for the 2020 game. Phantom Liberty is slated to launch at some point in 2023, and will be present during Summer Game Fest via the Play Days event for media. Windows Central's take The strength of The Witcher 3's ongoing sales legs can't be denied. This is down to a lot of things: Renewed interest from the Netflix show, a quality Nintendo Switch version, the recent current-generation update, but above all else, the game's quality continues to speak for itself. I still haven't had time to play more than an hour of the updated version, but I need to get back to it. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt crosses 50 million copies sold
