  1. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Hello Kerberos authentication is broken on Active Directory (AD) Domain Controllers (DC). The issue started after installing the latest April 2025 Patch Tuesday updates on Windows Server 2025 (KB5055523), Server 2022 (KB5055526), Server 2019 (KB5055519) and Server 2016 (KB5055521). The company explains: Microsoft adds that other products which rely on this can also also be affected, including smart card authentication products, third-party single sign-on (SSO), and so on. Microsoft has also explained what triggered the issue. The tech giant says that the problem is a result of a compatibility bug with the recent patches deployed for a Windows Kerberos Elevation of Privilege (network) security vulnerability. The vulnerability is tracked under ID CVE-2025-26647 and the patch details are available under KB5057784. The rollout of the above patch entered the initial deployment phase or audit mode with the April Patch, and hence, it is not enforced yet. Microsoft has explained the root of the problem below and also the symptoms: For now, the company says that the issue can be worked around by setting the aforementioned Registry value to "1" instead of "2". You can find the issue entry here on Microsoft's Windows Health Dashboard website. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 2. If you did not receive Windows 11's latest feature update, version 24H2, in its first round of release, you may want to check for updates as Microsoft announced yesterday that it is rolling out to more systems. On the same day, the team over at 0patch announced that it identified a new Windows vulnerability that allows attackers to steal NTLM credentials using malware. This zero-day security flaw affects all Windows clients, including Windows 11 24H2, and server versions. Microsoft has been made aware of it. 0patch writes: If you are wondering why Windows Server 2025 is missing from the list, 0patch co-founder, Mitja Kolsek, says that the team is still testing it as it is still less than a month old and it also has NTLM-related enhancements, among other things. Kolesk writes: Microsoft itself understands the drawbacks of NTLM or New Technology LAN Manager when it comes to security. It is also why the company has already announced the death of the feature and has recommended users and organizations move on to more secure and modern alternatives. 3. Microsoft has released the latest Windows Server preview build for members of the Windows Server Insider Program. The new build number is 26052 which is the same as the new Canary Channel preview build for Windows 11. The previous Windows Server preview build release for 26040 was also the first to support the recently added Server Flighting feature for faster updates. It also got branded with the new Windows Server 2025 name. The new 26052 has nearly the same change log as the 26040 release notes, with the exception of one additional known issue. Here is the changelog: You can still download the new Windows Server preview from Microsoft's site. You can check out the full blog post here. Source
  4. Microsoft has released the latest Windows Server preview build for members of the Windows Server Insider Program. The new build number is 26063, which is the same as the new Canary Channel preview build for Windows 11. Keep in mind that this and future Windows Server Insider builds now have the Windows Server 2025 branding. This latest build release has a few new features, including a Feedback Hub and a new wallpaper, both for desktop users. There are also some new known issues with this release. Here is the changelog: You can still download the new Windows Server preview from Microsoft's site. You can check out the full blog post here. Source
  5. A few weeks ago, Microsoft released new Windows 365 wallpapers for those accessing cloud-based Windows computers. Now, Windows Insiders can check out a couple of new images released alongside the latest Windows Server 2025 preview build. As usual, the new wallpapers in Windows Server 2025 build 26063 include two variants: one for those preferring light mode and one for those on the dark side. Windows 11 still does not support automatic theme switching, but at least we have native wallpapers in dark and light modes. Although Microsoft has mentioned the new background pictures in release notes for build 26063, there are no full-res images provided by the company. Luckily, Windows enthusiasts have already pulled the new wallpapers out of build 26063 and uploaded them to the internet. Here is the light variant: And here is the dark variant: You can check out other changes in Windows Server 2025 build 26063 in our dedicated article. Besides Windows Server 2025 build 26063, Microsoft today released build 26063 in the Canary Channel. It includes a number of changes, improvements, and new features, such as Wi-Fi 7 support, better Copilot integration, and more. Check out this article to learn more about the latest Windows Insider preview builds. Source
  6. Rumors about Microsoft adding sudo command to Windows 11 surfaced earlier this year. Users first discovered sudo references in language packs and then dug it out in one of the Windows Server preview builds. However, as it turned out, sudo is not coming to Windows Server—this feature will only be available on consumer versions of Windows 11. Microsoft officially announced sudo for Windows 11 in build 26052. Although the same build of Windows Server 2025 contains the setting for enabling sudo, Microsoft does not plan to implement it in server SKUs. The company clarified it in the release notes for build 26052: For those unfamiliar with the matter, sudo is a command that lets you execute commands with elevated privileges. It is a popular command on Linux and macOS, and now it is coming to Windows 11. Sudo in Windows 11 preview builds is turned off by default. If you want to give it a try, head to Settings > System > For developers and toggle on the "Enable sudo" option. You can also configure how the command works by selecting one of three different modes: in a new window, with input disabled, and inline. Alternatively, open Windows Terminal as administrator and type: In a new window: sudo config --enable forceNewWindow Input closed: sudo config --enable disableInput Inline: sudo config --enable normal If you want to learn more about sudo in Windows 11, check out this blog post from Microsoft. The company is also open-sourcing the project, so expect to hear more information about sudo in its GitHub repository. Official documentation for sudo is available on the Microsoft Learn website. 7. It's the second Tuesday of the month, which means it's Patch Tuesday time again. As such, today Microsoft is rolling out the monthly security update (also called "B release") for April 2024 on Windows Server 20H2, and Windows 10 for the latest supported versions, 20H2, 21H2, and 22H2. The new updates are being distributed under KB5036892, bumping up the builds to 19044.4291 and 19045.4291. You can find standalone links to download the new update on the Microsoft Update Catalog at this link here. The major highlight of the release as usual is security updates for Windows 10. After a couple of weeks without any, known issues are back: Known issues in this update Symptom Workaround Windows devices using more than one (1) monitor might experience issues with desktop icons moving unexpectedly between monitors or other icon alignment issues when attempting to use Copilot in Windows (in preview). To prevent users from encountering this issue, Copilot in Windows (in preview) might not be available on devices that have been used or are currently being used in a multimonitor configuration. We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. Copilot in Windows (in preview) is not currently supported when your taskbar is located vertically on the right or left of your screen. To access Copilot in Windows, make sure your taskbar is positioned horizontally on the top or bottom of your screen. We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. Some of the older Windows 10 versions have also received updates today which have been listed below with their respective release notes (KB) linked as well as links to download them at Microsoft's Update Catalog: Version KB Build Download Support 1809 KB5036896 17763.5696 Update Catalog Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) 1607 KB5036899 14393.6897 Update Catalog 1507 KB5036925 10240.20596 Update Catalog It is noteworthy here that Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 10 1909 reached the end of servicing. Some editions of 21H2 have also reached the end of servicing. Source
  8. Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed problems with LSASS (Local Security Authority Subsystem Service) memory leaks on several Windows Server versions, which could trigger an unscheduled reboot of domain controllers. Shortly after, the company pushed an out-of-band update to resolve the problem. A series of unscheduled updates is now available on the Microsoft Update Catalog for several Windows Server versions. Windows Server 2022 received KB5037422, Windows Server 2016 received KB5037423, and Windows Server 2012 R2 received KB5037426. Microsoft says the update for Windows Server 2019 will arrive "in near term." It is worth adding that the problem with memory leaks in LSASS should not bother regular home users with personal devices. The issue was only observed in Windows Server, plus domain controllers are not something regular customers use on their computers. What does affect most Windows 10 and 11 users is the expanded rollout of Copilot. Microsoft recently published a notification that its new AI-powered assistant is rolling out to more eligible devices. The rollout is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2024. Source
  9. Last week, Microsoft released its Patch Tuesday updates for March 2024 (Windows 10 / Windows 11). The latter fixes a 0x800F0922 error, which was an artifact of a previous buggy update. While the tech giant has not confirmed any major issues related to its Windows 10 and 11 Patch Tuesday updates, it has documented a major issue with the Server release. The company has confirmed an LSASS (Local Security Authority Subsystem Service) memory leak bug on domain controllers (DCs) while carrying out Kerberos authentication requests. Microsoft says that in extreme scenarios, the memory leak bug can lead to the crashing of LSASS, which means an unscheduled reboot is triggered, much to the annoyance of IT and system administrators and users alike. The LSASS helps authenticate users for local and remote sign-ins and enforce local security policies to prevent code injection that could lead to the compromise of credentials. It is part of the Local Security Authority (LSA) process. On its Windows health dashboard website, Microsoft explains: The good news is that the root cause has been identified, says Microsoft, and that it is working on a fix, which should be out in a few days. You may find more details about the issue on this page on Microsoft's Windows health website. Source
  10. Microsoft has released a new build of the Windows Server Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) Preview. Today's build 25941 is now available to download as an ISO from the Windows Server Insider website along with a VHDX. It contains both the (Windows 11) Desktop Experience as well as a Server Core installation option for Datacenter and the Standard edition. There's also an Azure Edition, but it's only available via virtual machines. There is a dedicated blog post for this new release. However, it has the same release notes as the previous one for build 25931. Having said that here is the changelog: What's New Azure Arc-enabled Servers onboarding experience is now available in the latest Windows Server Insider Desktop build. Find the new Azure Arc icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of the taskbar). Once Azure Arc is enabled on your server, find status information in the system tray icon. Server Datacenter Insiders! Take Terminal command line utility on Windows Server for a test run! Search for "Terminal" on the latest Server Datacenter Insider build and launch the application. Storage Replica Enhanced Log is now available in the latest Windows Server Insider build. Enhanced Log provides improved performance for block replication by removing file system abstractions – and their performance costs – from the Storage Replica log implementation. More info, and deployment instruction, is available on Learn: link. Known Issues If you are validating upgrades from Windows Server 2019 or 2022, we do not recommend that you use this build as intermittent upgrade failures have been identified for this build. This build has an issue where archiving eventlogs with "wevetutil al" command causes the Windows Event Log service to crash, and the archive operation to fail. The service must be restarted by executing "Start-Service EventLog" from an administrative command line prompt. If you have Secure Launch/DRTM code path enabled, we do not recommend that you install this build. The Windows Server Preview currently is on the same build number as the current Windows 11 Insider Canary channel, which might indicate we won't see a new Server version until next year when Windows 12 is expected to be released. 13. Earlier this month, Microsoft confirmed that a Windows Server update KB5036909 was buggy, leading to NTLM traffic spikes in Domain Controllers (DCs). The tech giant later added that in some instances, LSASS crashes were also happening, leading to a system reboot. With the latest Windows Server Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft has resolved this issue. It notes on the Windows Health Dashboard website: The resolution has also been listed in the highlights of KB5037782. However, there is no mention specifically of the LSASS crashes so that may or may not be resolved: The full list of improvements in the KB5037782 Server update is given below: You can view the support article on this page on Microsoft's website. 16. Microsoft to retire semi-annual Windows Server updates, will move entirely to LTSC releases Microsoft is changing the Windows Server release cadence, moving away from semi-annual releases. The company recently updated a support document with specifics about the new release cadence starting with Windows Server 2022 (spotted by Ghacks) and the changes to the support lifecycle. The company announced earlier this year that Windows Server 2022 will be the next Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release for server customers. However, unlike with the Windows 10-inspired release schedule, there will no longer be any semi-annual updates to the server OS. Microsoft will release a new version of the OS once in two to three years, which will be LTSC releases – that the firm calls the “one primary release channel”. Additionally, these releases, unlike client LTSC versions, will receive 10 years of support that includes five years of mainstream support, followed by five years of extended support. The change will be a welcome one for enterprises that prefer to stay on a server version for longer. Additionally, the efforts and resources required to validate new versions and deploy them might make semi-annual channel (SAC) releases troublesome for some. For those wondering about the support lifecycles for current SAC releases, the firm has provided a table with end of support dates for reference. Microsoft will be releasing Windows Server 2022 later this year, along with a client LTSC version based on Windows 10 version 21H2. The firm has also confirmed that a client LTSC release based on Windows 11 will eventually be released. However, that is still a few years out and there is no word on what the release cadence for client versions will be. Microsoft to retire semi-annual Windows Server updates, will move entirely to LTSC releases
  17. A few hours ago, Microsoft rolled out build 25217 to the Windows 11 Dev Channel with fixes for the Taskbar and Widgets, an updated Microsoft Store experience, a sneak peek of an enhanced Teams Chat experience, and a hidden UX change for Search. As usual, the company has also released the same build version for Windows Server Insider Preview. Build 25217 is available to download as an ISO from the Windows Server Insider website along with a VHDX. Even though this uses the same underlying kernel as the Windows 11 Dev build development, as per usual, there's no changelog to speak of. As such, it's unclear what's new in this build. The branding for Server has still not been updated and remains as Windows Server 2022 in the preview. In addition, Microsoft is asking Insiders to refer to these builds as vNext rather than Windows Server 2022 which is already in the market. The downloads currently on offer are: Windows Server VNext Preview ISO - Build 25217 Windows Server VNext Preview VHDX - Build 25217 Microsoft Server Languages and Optional Features Preview - Build 25217 Windows Admin Center 2208 Preview Meanwhile, the keys valid for preview builds are: Server Standard: MFY9F-XBN2F-TYFMP-CCV49-RMYVH Datacenter: 2KNJJ-33Y9H-2GXGX-KMQWH-G6H67 If you haven't registered for the Windows Server Insider Preview, find out how to do so by visiting the introductory page here and the Windows Insiders for Business portal here. 18. A lot of Windows bugs have been reported in the past couple of weeks alone. This includes an audio sync blocking issue and gaming performance deterioration for Windows 11 version 22H2, Direct Access problems, and Taskbar annoyances in Windows 10. Another issue that was acknowledged by Microsoft a few days ago relates to sign-in issues on Windows Servers with the Domain Controller role. The good news is that Microsoft has now resolved this problem. The issue in question was caused by this month's Patch Tuesday update, and it led to failures with Kerberos authentications when performing numerous activities, such as domain user sign-in, Remote Desktop connection failures for domain users, and printing that may require domain user authentication. In an update on its Windows health dashboard, Microsoft has announced that it is releasing out-of-band (OOB) updates that need to be installed on all DCs in your environment. The company has cautioned that no other changes are required on client or server devices, so if you made any to work around the issue yourself, you can safely remove them. It is important to understand that this latest patch is not delivered via Windows Update. Customers need to manually search for specific KB numbers in the Microsoft Update Catalog in order to download and install the updates. The KB numbers for server SKUs are listed below: Cumulative updates Windows Server 2022: KB5021656 Windows Server 2019: KB5021655 Windows Server 2016: KB5021654 Standalone Updates Windows Server 2012 R2: KB5021653 Windows Server 2012: KB5021652 Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: This update is not yet available. Please check here in the coming week for more information. Windows Server 2008 SP2: KB5021657 Depending upon what release cadence its customers have opted for, Microsoft has also published the following guidance: If you are using security only updates for these versions of Windows Server, you only need to install these standalone updates for the month of November 2022. Security only updates are not cumulative, and you will also need to install all previous Security only updates to be fully up to date. Monthly rollup updates are cumulative and include security and all quality updates. If you are using Monthly rollup updates, you will need to install both the standalone updates listed above to resolve this issue, and install the Monthly rollups released November 8, 2022 to receive the quality updates for November 2022. If you have already installed updates released November 8, 2022, you do not need to uninstall the affected updates before installing any later updates including the updates listed above. The update affects pretty much all server and client versions of Windows, so it's good to see Microsoft releasing OOB updates for critical issues such as these instead of waiting for next month's Patch Tuesday cycle to kick off. 19. While we wait for a new build in the Dev Channel, Microsoft is busy updating Windows Server. Build 25246 is available for download with new features previously available only in Windows 10. Those not happy with the taskbar in Windows 11 will be glad to know that Microsoft is about to restore the ability to enable seconds for the clock in the notification area (system tray), getting the new operating system one step closer to feature parity with Windows 10. Microsoft has not formally announced the updated clock yet, and the feature is not available "out of box." As is tradition, you need to enable it using the ViveTool app and a dedicated ID (generously provided by @PhantomOfEarth). Here is how. Note: You cannot enable seconds in the system tray clock on "regular" Windows Insider builds. Only Windows Server build 25246 has this feature for now. Caution: Unannounced features are often raw, unstable, or borderline unusable. Back up important data before using the ViveTool app and enabling hidden options. Remember that using stable Windows 11 is the best way to ensure your system remains as bug-free as possible. How to enable seconds for the clock in the system tray in Windows Server build 25246 Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files somewhere convenient. Press Win + R and type cmd. Navigate to the folder containing the extracted files using the CD command. For example, if you have extracted ViveTool to C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id:41314201 and press Enter. Go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and place a checkmark next to the Show seconds in system tray clock option. Restart the system. Will you enable the seconds feature once it arrives for "regular" Windows Insiders? Share your thoughts in the comments. Windows 11 will soon let you enable seconds in system tray clock
  20. Microsoft has released a new build of the Windows Server Insider Preview. Build 25227 is available to download as an ISO from the Windows Server Insider website along with a VHDX. Even though this uses the same underlying kernel as the Windows 11 Dev build development, as per usual, there's no changelog to speak of, so it's unclear what's new in this build. The branding for Server has still not been updated and remains as Windows Server 2022 in the preview. In addition, Microsoft is asking Insiders to refer to these builds as vNext rather than Windows Server 2022 which is already in the market. Build 25227 of Server contains just one Known Issue, listed below: The Languages and Optional Features Preview fails to enable sporadically with an error "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry-undoing changes. Please keep your computer on" Available Downloads: Windows Server VNext Preview in ISO format in 18 languages, and in VHDX format in English only. 21. Microsoft has released a new build of the Windows Server Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) Preview. Today's build 25295 is now available to download as an ISO from the Windows Server Insider website along with a VHDX. It contains both the (Windows 11) Desktop Experience as well as a Server Core installation option for Datacenter and the Standard edition. As per usual, there's no changelog to speak of, so it's unclear what's new in the bits that relate to Server, for a changelog of the build 25295 client, go here. Branding has not yet been updated and remains as Windows Server 2022 in the preview. In addition, Microsoft is encouraging Insiders to give feedback in the Windows Server category and then the appropriate subcategory. The company asks to indicate the build number you are providing feedback on along with the title as shown in the example below: [Server #####] Title of my feedback What's New There are no new features shared about this build. Known Issues While using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or in doing a clean install of Build 25295, users may encounter rendering issues which create difficulty in using these processes. Build-to-build upgrade is unaffected. Installing the Languages and Optional Features preview will put the Server in a state where SCONFIG does not reliable start up after login, and Remote Desktop functionality into the Server fails inconsistently. If you depend on either Remote Desktop or SCONFIG, you may wish to avoid installing the Languages and Optional Features preview. 22. December 2022's Patch Tuesday (KB5022083) packed a security update for .NET and .NET Framework, changing how Windows Presentation Foundation-based (WPF) applications render XPS documents. This caused many users to experience issues as XPS documents which leverage structural elements like tables and hyperlinks will not display correctly in WPF-based readers. Moreover, some inline images may not display correctly in XPS documents or throw Null reference exceptions in WPF-based readers. Although Microsoft issued a couple of temporary workarounds involving PowerShell scripts and Windows registry configurations, the company has now rolled out a more permanent fix through an out-of-band (OOB) update. The OOB update is now available for the following platforms: Windows 11 version 22H2 Windows 11 version 21H2 Windows Server 2022 Azure Stack HCI version 22H2 Azure Stack HCI version 21H2 Windows 10 version 22H2 Windows 10 version 21H2 Windows 10 version 20H2 Windows 10 version 1809 Windows Server 2019 Windows 10 version 1607 Windows Server 2016 It is important to understand that this OOB update is not being delivered through Windows Update. As such, if you want to install it, you should navigate to the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for the various KB numbers mentioned in Microsoft's support document. Now that this permanent fix is available, you can also revert any temporary workarounds you may have applied as they are no longer needed. Microsoft releases OOB update for Windows 10, 11, and Server to fix .NET issue
  23. Microsoft has released a new build of the Windows Server Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) Preview. Today's build 25284 is the second such release, only two weeks after build 25276 (typically one build a month) and is now available to download as an ISO from the Windows Server Insider website along with a VHDX. It contains both the (Windows 11) Desktop Experience as well as a Server Core installation option for Datacenter and the Standard edition. As per usual, there's no changelog to speak of, so it's unclear what's new in the bits that relate to Server, for a changelog of the build 25284 client, go here. 24. Earlier this month, Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 and 8.1. In addition to killing the most loved/hated OS combo, Microsoft stopped supporting Edge on outdated platforms. However, a few days ago, the company revealed slightly revised plans. Those using Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will continue getting updates for the Microsoft Edge browser until October 10, 2023. Here is what Microsoft says in the updated announcement post: Microsoft Edge version 109 will be the last supported version on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (version 110 and later will be unavailable). Version 109 will receive critical security fixes and fixes for known exploit bugs until October 10, 2023. WebView2 Runtime version 109 will be supported in the same way. Additionally, Internet Explorer 11 remains supported on those operating systems for as long as they are in support. It is worth noting that extended support does not mean new features or updates to more recent versions. Microsoft will only issue the most critical security updates, and the browser will remain on version 109 until its end. Also, an attempt to install Microsoft Edge 110 and newer on Windows 7 or 8.1 will result in the installer reporting an unsupported operating system. Switching to Firefox might be your only option if you have a Windows 7 or 8 system that cannot be updated to Windows 10 or 11. Mozilla still supports its browser on now-dead Windows versions, but that will not last long. Microsoft extends Edge support on Windows Server 2012 and R2 to October 2023
  25. Microsoft has released a new out-of-band update for Windows Server to address SQL issues that occur after installing the June 2024 Patch Tuesday updates. According to a post on the Windows Message Center, the problem with Azure Synapse SQL happens on Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 23H2, and Azure Stack HCI 23H2/22H2. Right now, the fix in the form of KB5041054 is available for Windows Server 2022 and Azure Stack HCI 22H2. Patches for the remaining platforms will be available in future Windows Updates. Here is the official changelog for KB5041054: KB5041054 is available only in the Microsoft Update Catalog. It is a cumulative update (restart required), which means there is no need to apply previous updates before installing KB5041054. Microsoft says that if a system has yet to install the June 2024 Patch Tuesday updates, it is recommended to apply KB5041054 beforehand. It is also worth noting that the problem does not affect regular home users with Windows 10 and 11 Home or Professional. However, those users should also be aware of a couple of confirmed issues, such as jumplist bugs and problems with updating from Windows 10 Professional to Enterprise. You can find more information about KB5041054 in the official documentation. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post.
